I AM NOW ON MATERNITY LEAVE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Please reach us at pow.speechtherapy@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question. Alternatively, you can contact us through the form on our Contact page.
Please check the website before filling in the contact form. If I don't have any availability to take on new clients this will be stated at the top of the website and on the "Contact" page.
If you don't see the above messages, this means I am available to take on new clients. Please use the contact form to get in touch and include as much information as possible. I will get back to you with my availability. If I am fully booked with ongoing clients, I will let you know and you may make the decision to look for another SLT. You can also keep visiting the website and/or Instagram to check for updates on my availability to take on new clients.
If I am available to take your child on, I will send you two forms to fill in (a case history form and our Terms of Service Policies) and will arrange a phone call/email to discuss further.
I offer 30 minute sessions. This may be extended provided there is availability. These are weekly sessions. Sessions continue until you are ready to stop.
Sessions are typically at your home. For school sessions, this needs to be arranged through yourself and the school. All sessions require an adult to be present (for school sessions this means either you or a consistent teaching assistant who will be in each session).
I DO NOT offer clinic sessions.
Prices are displayed on the "Fees" page. Specific consultation packages and prices are displayed on the "Consultations" page. Once you are a client, you will receive more detailed information about fees and how to pay.
Therapy is different for each child. However, typically games and toys are used to work on our goals.
Therapy is child-led. This means we follow what your child is interested in to ensure they are getting the most out of their sessions.
I honour sensory differences and don't require children to be seated and "do work". Your child is free to move around and communicate how they like.
For children with a language delay only (i.e no other diagnoses), therapy is in the form of parent coaching. This means as a parent you will be actively involved in the session. You will get to practice strategies in the session and be required to demonstrate how you have been using them during the week. I will give feedback and will introduce a new strategy as appropriate.
For other children:
Depending on what your child is working on, you might be asked to join in for an activity or for none. Either way, it is important for you to be in the session so you can observe therapy activities and goals as you will need to practice these during the week. You may wish to bring a paper and pen to write down activities and tips.
No. As a private therapist, I accept self-referrals. Sessions are paid for by yourself. I do not accept payments via health insurance companies.
I do not keep a waiting list. As therapy can last months (and sometimes years), it is hard to keep new clients informed of when there will be availability. To allow for a fairer system, parents are asked to contact POW only once they see the contact form is available on the "Contact" page.
If there is no current availability, this will be stated on the "Contact" page. Please keep checking the website for updates on availability to see new clients.
There are different reasons why language or speech may be delayed. Your child might also have other skills that they need to work on first, which will be picked up in the assessment.
Therapy aims to improve your child's communication skills and this can look different for each child. For some it may be that they develop age-appropriate skills and for others it may be that we introduce adaptions and supports, thinking of alternative ways to communicate.
As therapists we support rather than "fix" children. Learning new ways to communicate is a skill which requires lots of patience, practice and time. Your child needs to be supported at home and school too (i.e. by sharing reports and techniques we are using in sessions).
There is some trial and error involved in finding what will work for your child. It is important for us to work together to see improvements.
Please read the "Timing" section on the Assessment page for more information.
I do not diagnose Autism or any other developmental conditions. If you have concerns please seek an Autism evaluation from your GP.
I do however provide speech and language therapy for Autistic children and can see your child whilst you are going through the diagnostic process.
Yes, please do access NHS speech therapy if you have this option.
NHS therapy tends to provide a block of therapy (set amount of weeks) and reviews thereafter. A lot of parents find this is not enough for their child.
However if your child is seeing an NHS therapist, please provide details of reports and your therapist's contact details, to enable me to liaise with them.
Please note I will not be accepting new clients for the foreseeable future.
